A studio service

Books that make hospital less scary.

Preparation storybooks, medical-play colouring books, bravery activity kits and parent journals, illustrated for children's hospitals and the teams who look after young patients. Drawn to your own wards, scanners and mascot, reviewed with your Child Life specialists, and delivered as print-ready files your foundation can run in any quantity.

Made for the bedside, not the gift shop.

Illustrated hospital preparation book and activity pages on a children's ward bedside table

N° 01What we make

Five things a children's ward keeps asking for.

01

"My visit to…" preparation books

A picture book that walks a child through your hospital before they arrive: the entrance, the ward, the people, the MRI scanner or the theatre doors. Drawn from your photographs so it looks like your building.

02

Procedure books

Short, honest stories for one procedure at a time: surgery, MRI, a cast, a blood test, an X-ray, the emergency department. Sequenced with your Child Life team so nothing surprises the child.

03

Medical-play colouring books

Colouring and activity pages that make equipment familiar: the bracelet, the IV pole, the stethoscope. Single-sided, crayon-friendly, sealed for infection control.

04

Bravery and coping activity kits

Feelings check-ins, a brave plan, mazes, dot-to-dots and a certificate, built around a story or your mascot. English and Spanish editions on the same files.

05

NICU and parent journals

Milestone pages, space to write, and gentle illustrations for parents living on the unit. Branded to your NICU and family-care programme.

06

Mascot and welcome books

If your hospital has a mascot, children should be able to read about them. Welcome books, orientation booklets and mascot stories for admissions packs.

N° 02Built with your team

Reviewed by the people who use it.

Every page goes to your Child Life specialists or play team before anything is final. Medical sequences follow their guidance, wording sits at a plain-language reading level, and age bands are explicit on the cover. We follow the ACLP health-literacy guidance and keep pages faith-neutral and culturally considered by default.

Materials are designed for how wards work: new and sealed, no cloth or small parts, single-use activity pages each child keeps, and files your own printer or foundation can run again whenever stock is low.

N° 03Your hospital, on every page

Drawn from your building.

Send us photographs of your entrance, a bay, the playroom, the scanner room and your staff uniforms. We illustrate from them, so a child who has read the book recognises where they are on the day. Your mascot, if you have one, leads the story.

Once your first book exists, procedure titles share the same characters and style, so the surgery book and the MRI book feel like one family.

N° 04Who pays for it

Funded the way hospitals fund things.

Most books are paid for by a hospital foundation, a family-support charity or a patient-experience budget. Some are sponsored by a local business or a patient organisation and carry a small acknowledgement on the back cover. Nonprofits that distribute into hospitals commission kits directly. We quote the design once; you own the files and print as many as you need.

What every package covers, and what it doesn't

What you get

  • Design and illustration of every page in the agreed page count
  • Files you own and can print as often as you like, on any printer
  • Wording at a plain-language reading level, with your team's review
  • Spanish or Arabic editions as an add-on, or included where listed

What we don’t do

  • Printing, sealing, crayons or shipping (files go to your printer)
  • Medical content written without your clinicians: your team approves every procedure page
  • Photography of your hospital (you send photographs; we draw from them)
  • Extra pages, titles or languages beyond the caps (quoted separately)
  • Unlimited revisions or changes after sign-off

Sponsor acknowledgements and hospital logos are placed small, as Child Life teams prefer.

N° 06Questions

The answers we give most often.

Can you make our existing preparation PDF look better?
Yes. Many hospitals have an in-house prep booklet that is medically right and visually dated. We keep your sequence and wording, redraw every page, and hand back print files. It's usually the fastest project we do.
Who reviews the medical content?
Your Child Life specialists, play team or nursing lead. We build review into the schedule: page plan first, then sketches, then final art. Nothing goes to print without their sign-off.
Do you do Spanish or Arabic editions?
Yes. Editions are built page for page from the same files, so both languages match. Your own translators can supply the wording, or we can draft it for their review.
Can a nonprofit or a family order this for a hospital?
Yes, and it happens often. Foundations, charities and families commission kits and books that are then donated through the hospital's Child Life department. We design to the hospital's donation rules from the start.
How long does it take?
An activity kit takes three to four weeks. A preparation book usually takes six to eight weeks, including two review rounds with your team.
